What’s preferable for Btech students ?

A question that had much confused me to the core in the beginning was about which is preferable to BTech students,MBA or MTech or ahem,MS(as most prefer).I know that almost all the students doing or has completed Btech has thought of this question atleast once during their lifetime..still as i dont expect to get placed after completing my Btech  due to ahem u know, this question was of utmost importance to me.Also this global recession thing has ensured one thing..that the Btech students who are passing out these 2-3 years dont get a permanent job..it will take quite a lot of skill and a lot of luck to hang on to ur job..anyway my top priority now is to pass all papers in BTech and think of other options later…but as i see many who are confused what to do after their engg.,i thought this is a subject of utmost importance and someone has to start a discussion so i thought i would..this is just an attempt for that..do post ur opinions on the topic as comments

i found a lot of opinions..well narrowing it all down it comes to our personal opinion but in this age we have to take advice of the people who have experienced this. Many people at this point ask a question:”If you are going to do an MBA after Btech why did you do Btech in the first place…why did u वर्क so hard for these 4 years to get your BTech if you are trying to go from the technological field.!!”(worked hard :O ??)..anyway this question is typically another example of people being ignorant..well yes its the students personal decision which matters anyway..theres a saying “survival of the fittest” it becomes relevant in todays nightmarish conditions..rest u guess.

Earn money and live fast- MBA
Earn respect and live peacefully- MTECH

this is a definition i found in the net.well its the truth..people who do MTech are more into the teaching field..though one can take an MBA even after completing MTech..another post which i found in the net lays out many reasons why MTech has lost its value and why MS is so far better..well i donno..i think MTech at IITs or IISc is certainly better..a person was telling me last day that she wont study in India if she dont get into IISc or an IIT..our IITs are best in the world in undergraduate disciplines only ie in BTech, and not the numero uno in graduate disciplines..and of course as many might know,a degree from IISc,bangalore is better than IITs.still i have heard that each IIT is famous for some streams, and it would be best if you opt for that.i dono details..i never tried for IITs..it snt somthng u can achieve in a day rite..and m too lazy..also if one is interstd in working, then why mtech?i mean as far as i hav heard btech students are called for the same job with mtech ns..wel we can enjoy 2 more yrs college with mtech thats true..anyway comin bak to the subject,:evn though this is the case, people point out that MS is certainly much better..i mean all these students are writing GATE and only the best get into IISc,the dream college and secondly to the IITs..well if MS was better why did these lakhs of students studied hard for GATE and got in….still with the availablity of so much bank loans..students tend to go abroad in flocks..the competition is much lesser abroad and the bankloans and scholarships promote students to go out of the country.and what is AMIE and MIE ..is MIE a substitute for MTech..the only extrathing i see is that we get regular magazines at my home due to that :D

now talkin about MBAs.A Btech from an IIT with an MBA from an IIM is the dream combination as widely approved.and it neednt be an BTech from an IIT too…any students passing out from IIMs can get upto 15-20 lakhs per month..well itsnot just about money..also one take an MBA after MTech too..but it is the getting into top Bschools that matter…CAT conducted by the IIMs(Indian Institute of Management s)is considered as the world’s toughest exam even though the syllabus is just the portions upto standard 10 in school..yes,u heard it rite !!believe your eyes…portion upto 10th only :) also in numbers, out of 300,000 students who take this exam, only the top 1 or 2 % students(meaning they have to come into top 3000-6000 and also cleared cutoff in all the 3 sections of the aptitude test namely quant, verbal & DI) are selected to take part in GD s at each IIMs..then the students who passed GD is led to the interview after that…Finally only about 1000-2000 students are selected to the IIMs..IIM admission process renowned as the three layer elimination process is many a person’s nightmare.and i think it made it to some guiness record or somthng as the worlds toughest admission process or rejection ratio somthng..anyway,the reward can be huge…IIMs are rated as the toughest Bschools in the world to get into and ofcourse the students who made it are safe..with a salary package upto Rs 2 crore p.a(u have got to trust ur eyes again, lol),a PGDM (equiv to an MBA) from an IIM is many a person’s dream..

also there are many who write the civil service exams or the IES(Indian engineering services),the IRS etcand other examinations..i know that many, now are preparing for the JTO exam as i write this piece..many opt to work in ece or software after getting a Btech..and many has advised me to work for some years and go take an MBA cos the best Bschools in the world look for work experience..

i posted this cos i thot its a subject which needs to be discussed among students now a days..and it wud be certainly be helpful if someone gives some advise..well..i at present am aiming to complete my BTech..thats of the topmost priority…and i dont know if i would get placement with my marks…still if i do,i would really like to work..

and it would really be helpful if someone would post something about the CDS(combined defense services)exam.. any advice on anything which can be easily gained is welcome :P

WE GET SO MANY COMMENTS..MANY REPEATED QUERIES THAT WE HAVE TO DELETE ALMOST ALL THE TIME ..PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE COMMENTS BEFORE ASKING A QUESTION WHICH IS ALREADY ANSWERED…AND WE ARE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING,ADOOR STUDENTS AND ALUMNI..WE ARE NOT SOME AGENCY OR TRAINING CENTRE…

    Hi Guys.

    Its a brilliant presentation.
    Here is my opinion.

Doing MBA/MS/Mtech after btech is really very good.
I wont support the idea of doing MBA soon after Btech.
    Jibin presented that
“Earn money and live fast- MBA”. Its absolutely true. But the fact is after completing MBA, The job opportunities will be limited to certain areas like “HR Management, Operations management, sales and accounting management and infrastucture management”. In IT industry, the opportunity for a fresher will be limited to “HR management”. The other areas will definitely require a certain amount of experience. Once you are sticked to a certain area like “HR management”, Then you will find it difficult to change your operational area. I am not discouraging the idea of doing an MBA soon after your BTech. These are certain facts which you must be aware of before diverting from the core to other fields. What I recommend is, get some experience (at least 2.5 years) and try MBA. After this, you will be getting good opportunities in other functional areas.

Feel free to ask me your questions. You are always welcome!

    With My Very Best,
    Subavu

And also my imp. doubt is in INDIA is MS and MTech students have equal priority.

    hi varun…

good question….let me tell you..in india there are many univ/instis offer MS…amongst tht the pgms offered by IITs n IISc only will come into light because of obvious reasons….if i recall, 10 years ago even iits didnot encourage students to join MS n it got changed during last 5 years…n many joined for MS in iits….now there is again a decline on students who join for MS….WHY?
simply because MS is a purely research oriented degree. as laborious as doing a PhD….the frame work n effort are more or less the same…personally speaking, if u don have a strong inclination towards research, MS is not your cut of tea. it needs that much passion and consistent drive…it can take fairly three years to complete whereas MTech guys complete it in 2 years time.
Mtech is purely an academic degree….you will do a number of courses and do a small project and get the degree….MS is totally different…tht s y u must understand the program and its future before joining…otherwise there are always chances of frustrations…..there could be about 5% of guys who complete within 2 years….tht s very special case…the actual time required is 3 years….i can tell u d process..

    1. during the first six months u will be busy with courses, ofcourse there will also be one or two courses in the next sem too…

    2. second semester, u will read literature and try to define the pbm….

    3. third sem, u will be doing a coding or seting up of experiment or formulating the problem etc..

    4. 4th n 5th sem it continues….n u will find some bugs in the code, den u break ur head to fix those n discussions with guide….etc…

    5. then u also need to write a paper n attend one or two conferences etc….this takes considerable time…
also u might see some uncertainities everywhere….

m not discouraging any of u…..thing s u will hav an idea of the height at which u gonna jump…..

    job opportunity is ofcourse there….

    let me tell u a general guideline…
when it comes to higher studies, please don ever do it just for getting a job. ofcourse, all of us work for winning our bread n butter. that u can get it with a graduate degree…u must have solid reasons n interest to do a higher study…otherwise u cant reach the heights…also where u gonna do matters a lot….pls don do a higher degree just for the sake of it….u can hav it for a fancy resume, but none recognise tht….

    i hope i cud giv u an overview….
pls feel free to ask if u hav any queries….

I’ll complete my Btech by 2011.
I plan to go for a job after it.Work and prepare for MBA side-by-side.
I wanted to know is it a good choice?I mean is the approach right?I’ve opted for courses in JAVA(NIIT)and would continue doing some more courses so that by the time my BTECH. end my resume is a “Good-One”.

Could you please tell me the pros and cons of this approach and also some courses that are important for me to learn and are wide in demand?

Well, tht s fine…u can find a job after ur course n can work for a couple of years, den u can pursue MBA.
So ur qn is to get a job wht u wanna do while doing B.Tech…simple, try to understand the concepts of ur core subjects and try to develop interest in one of the subjects..say object oriented pgm, something like tht….i guess so bcs u r doing Java, rite…try to make some small applications and try to do ur project in tht….it wud be nice if u can find a good company, wherein u can do the project….if u hav a good understanding abt the subject n is able to do the proj more or less independently they will appreciate the work n even offer a job…..
i guess some comp geek n this forum can giv him some tips on the most demanding area in IT as m nt an it guy…..

The article is nice and gives a person an opportunity to think in depth about what to do after B.Tech. I thought about the same topic when many students asked me what to do after their engineering?

I completed my B.Tech in Electronics and Telecommunication from CEA. Even though I was interested in doing higher education after B.Tech., I was a bit confused about what to opt-M.Tech or MBA? I have done a course in Mainframe and joined an MNC as a software engineer. After a couple of years, I found my job similar to a ‘clerical job’. My job was hectic & stressful with a good pay package. But I learned what I could have learned in one and a half years and I had two options before me- either move out of that project and join another one or do a higher course.

I did not take the first option as I was sure after four years there will not be much to learn new things unless I moved out of my domain-mainframe. Before joining the company I was interested in doing M.Tech. But my perspectives had changed after work experience. I made up my mind a chose MBA. After a year in MBA, I was not happy with the concept of specialisation because we will be like a frog in a well and digging more and more in that well. After five years, I will be very good in my specialisation. So my goal has changed and became more focused- to be an entrepreneur. This way I am not restricted to any specialisations.

My transition Electronics & Telecommunication-Software Engineer-MBA in Finance-Entrepreneur can be viewed in two perspectives. One is following my mind and the negative perspective is one without having a clear long term goal. This is what we all are lacking. What to do after B.Tech. will be decided only after completing the B.Tech. Most foreign people excel in their field because while doing their high school itself, they have a clear goal of what they want to be. But I agree that this cannot be possible in India all the time.

I will not regret that I have done my B.Tech. for 4 years and MBA after that. Even I asked the same question, if I have to do MBA, what is the point in doing a B.Tech.? A B.Tech. helps in getting more to numbers and being logical in the decision making. This is very-very helpful in MBA. Do you know why very few HR managers are becoming CEOs? They are not good in numbers. If they are good in numbers, they will surely become CEOs one day. The affinity towards numbers and logic/reasoning makes the CAT/MAT/any entrance exams cracked mostly by engineers. Also the use of I.T in all the fields gives an advantage for B.Tech. graduates over others to be in managerial post. It is a fact that those who excel in finance are either those who completed their graduation in commerce or a B.Tech. graduate.

My suggestion is that it would be better to gain some work experience after B.Tech. This will give you a clear picture of what is happening in the industry irrespective of what you plan to do-whether it be MBA or M.Tech. or M.S. It also makes your goals more sharpened and focused. After that follow your mind. Keep your ears and mind open. Read about the job openings, opportunities etc from news papers (Better to check the websites of Times of India suppliments on Monday & Wednesday, The Hindu suppliment – Opportunities etc). Discuss with your friends, seniors, your boss etc.
Do not follow the ideologies of others blindly. Follow your mind. Ask yourself what you want to be and make decisions according to your wish. All the best.

    Rogen Reply:

Being good at numbers is NOT the only thing that one gets out of B.Tech. It is an added advantage for the Engineers. That’s what i meant.

You may get jobs in core field itself where you have to be in a managerial position.
Eg. Operations head in a manufacturing firm, in IT, Marketing head in Electrical/Electronics firms etc. to name a few.
Operations and Marketing people should not only use their managerial skills, but also their Engg. mindset. And they have to use it.

There is also a position called ‘Business Analyst’. Engineers with an MBA are the best for this job. Business Analyst should understand the business and must convey the functional business knowledge in terms of technical to the tech people. Especially in IT firms, where the developer/tester is not aware of the business functionality. Eg., a developer who is developing a software for stock exchanges or for banks. A graduate in B.Tech/B.E with MBA helps to clearly understand the requirement and convert it into technological terms which is understandable for the coders/programmers.

if u r looking for earning money and to live fast u shud look for an MBA degree. With a CAT score of 99 percentile or above u will surely get an IIM call. But to bell the CAT is like pulling ur teeth.Nearly 3L students appeared for CAT,and around 1700 people got selected to d IIMs.ie they need only the cream layer. If u r a real CAT aspirant and is aiming to get into any of the IIMs,u shud start now itself.Otherwise its gonna be like flogging a dead horse.

i am commenting in general…and am not gonna say that u shud pursuse MBA or Mtech after engg..
    its ur choice…..!!
any way i dont think to do MBA after BTech is a bad option..!!
u can go for MBA after Bsc or Bcom or any other degree..!!
but wats actually a good management…with out enough technical knowledge..???
u need to be techincaly fit to solve any problems….!!!
so u need not worry that Btech u did is useless.!!
so MBA+Btech wil be preference for any technical company..!!

    then next part…!!MTech or MS…???

MTech in IIT wil be a better aim for a student who did BTech in kerala…!!
surely MS in a gud institute lik masachus wil be better than Mtech in IIsc or IIt..!!
but IIt mtech wil be better than most of the institutes outside…!!
other problem is that most of the nations r givin more preference to their nationalities for givin jobs due to the recessions….
hence we wil be havin a lower priority if we r doin MS outside…!!
i dont think indian companies give enough weightage to MS …
i think they prefer Mtech more than MS!!

i think Mtech also wil fetch u a good salary but wil take more time to reach such a postition than a mba holder..!!

and openly speakin just MBA and MTech are not the only options left after btech..!!
for mechanical eng many diplomas are available for specialicing…..and can get to good jobs even after that..!!
knowhow in CAD and other related softwares can also fetch u a good job after BTech..!

any way think wise …and choose ur option..!!
    good luck..!!!

I think prsnl intrst and attitude also hav a great deal in this.We dont hav 2 run in the same path our seniors did.Frm exprncd prsns i knew that the the job of an MBA holdr is so boring as it is repetitive(at least for HR’s.As my cousin is an MBA(HR) holder and working in a company in Chennai). As being a Mechanical engineer, i opt to stick on to technical field itself, as ther will b so many chances 4 us to do smthng revolutionary, especially in design field(if luckly that happns, then u can earn much more salary than an MBA graduate frm IIM or any other reputed Bschools).

I also heard abt CDS.Donno much dtls.To my view it will b the best option as it will give us a chance to serve our very very loving mother land. Also i heard that v will get a very nice salary, around Rs.30,000 at beginning(with out counting any othr benefits)in our hands.
I think v directly get to a Lieutenant rank(not sure abt that).

If you do your M.Tech. from a reputed institute like IIT, IISc, IIIT Hyderabad etc., you don’t have to look back. Same is the case with M.S from a reputed foreign institution. If it is not a reputed institution or if you do not get a job abroad after your M.S, then there is no point in doing M.S in a foreign institute.

But if you do your M.Tech from an average or ‘above average’ college, most probably, you will end up in a college as a lecturer or in R&D.
Unless you get into an institute as a lecturer or in Research and Development of a firm, you will be treated just like a B.Tech graduate; but with a slightly higher pay package. Some times companies consider an M.Tech graduate as ‘over-qualified’ and will not be selected in an interview when the same job can be done with a B.Tech graduate. If you get selected for an R&D job, you may enjoy it. But beware; R&D is where the companies cut their cost through lay-off during recession times(and that’s bad. I personally don’t agree to such company policies).

If you are a techie (or a ‘nerd’), go for M.Tech. It will be highly useful as you will enjoy it. But do it ONLY from a very good, reputed institute like IIT or IISc.

    well, to comment,

    regarding MBA stuff,
i would recommend to do it after getting a hands on…then the question about regaining the enthu to go bak to books n getting the wallet drained….there are a few solutions….
if ur academic track record is good and having work experience, say 4 years, IIMs give you a chance to do MBA for executives. The class is on Fridays, in the case of IIM Blore…this u can even attend thro Reliance web world…ofcourse u need to pay the course fee…so u can sort out the issue to an extent.
you can go through the iim web sites for details.
and certain companies sponsors though u need to sign a bond.

regarding CDS, pls go through the link below. i had come across this news a lil before. as i understand, there is an exclusive web site too. Your campus placement officer can also talk to defense officials and arrange for a placement campaign.

    Guys,

I am really glad in the fact that we just created an active debate out here. Kudos to all who put this thread so active. I have a few things which i would like to share with you.

First of all, let me share something about attitude.
“Survival Of the Fittest”, its been the charm which will make you to keep your faith in this competitive world. Everyone for themselves. The main driving force for this is simply your attitude. No matter who you are, and whatever you do, only your attitude is measured. I hope you guys should have undergone some kind of attitude measurements till now. When a firm is coming there to recruit young and fresh candidate, they are simply measuring your attitude through out the recruitment process. They will recruit the right candidates with the attitude to explore something. The attitude is the sum of your self confidence, knowledge and your smartness. if you have these quality, then the recruiters will have a faith on the future of the company by recruiting the good candidates. If you have the attitude to broaden your knowledge, you will definitely be going do an MBA/Mtech/MS after getting some amount of work experience.

Also I noticed that, most of you guys are a bit amazed by the hectic amount of salary packages offered. But in reality, I would like to suggest you to be work motivated. Not money motivated. You are about to start your career. The biggest motivation for you guys should be nourishing your knowledge and areas of expertise. I was in the 2002-06 EB batch. Still a lot of my friends are there, simply sitting in the benches of top MNCs to get a right opportunity. They are getting the industry standard salary package. but the thing is, they are still lacking the knowledge expectation from a 3 yr experienced professional. So dont be too much concerned about the salary now. Just focus on getting some great experience. It will be counted later on through out your career. someone stated above that, we will be getting bored after getting the right amount of knowledge and experience. its true. its damn true. but be proactive! Learn as much as you can before getting bored [;)]. After that try to learn something new, to be more creative and innovative.Thats why most of the professionals are quitting the job after a certain period of time.

As per the recent studies, the aftermath of this so called financial crisis will see the dusk by the beginning of 2010. The share market is showing the symptoms of the recovery. So there is no point in worrying about the job opportunities. The biggest deal of a firm while recruiting is to find a candidate with right attitude. And the most interesting fact is, The so called right attitude is only shown by freshers. So please dont worry about getting a job. Just try to build an attitude to be more innovative and creative.

Just keep in mind the slogan of one of the biggest firm in the world “Stop talking! Start doing”.

“Awake! arise! stop not till the goal is reached”# swami vivekananda.

Quite sad that the only factor that seems to help you decide is monetary. This always has been a problem with Indian students. The IIM dream is no longer what it was, most of the high paying companies were Investment Banks and half of them have gone bust. I personally know people who have passed out off IIM-A this year, a few who had no option but to go for Govt/PSU jobs and the rest with a far lower salary than the previous batches (and i mean on average 10-15 lakhs per *annum*, not per month) My main motivation to go for an MS in US is to “learn” computer science. This is not really possible in Indian universities, with incompetent Professors and a generally outdated syllabus. And as someone who works in the IT industry, I have observed that most people in the top positions of top companies generally have a degree from the US. The stuff you learn in a B-Tech from an Indian college is generally useless and hardly helps you in your profession. More often that not, you actually have to unlearn whatever you have learnt and start from scratch. Anyways, i hope students start thinking about higher education to actually learn further in their field of interest or maybe even switch streams rather than just earn more!

Besides am MBA from India, the students can also look at an American/Canadian etc B Schools through GMAT.

With the economic slowdown, companies tend to give priority to experienced hands. This is the case even in India, where freshers used to get admission into reputed B schools just as much(or even more) than those who’ve had 2-4 yrs of work experience.

Abroad, the value of your B school certificate depends a lot on the work experience you’ve had before. Some of the students in US did tell me that Indian origin MBA graduates with no prior work experience end up with low paid salesman sorta job.Having spend more than 75 lakhs, thats definitely the last thing that you want!

More than the quality of education offered by IITs,its the pure brains that make into them which help these institutes in the rating.Sure, they are miles of other Indian institutes but in the international scenerio???

India seriously lacks quality PG/PHD level education. This is one of the reasons why most of the students in premiere institutes end up in some US university.Lets accept it.Our M Tech degrees are nowhere near world standards.IITs do stand apart but how many can get through into those???Going abroad for MS is definitely a good option, provided the student is well informed about the course/the fee structure/university and scholarship.

Foreign universities offer students a wide range of courses in the PG level. It wont cost you a bomb as in MBA’s case either. Some of the management oriented like MIS for computer science students are the closest to an MBA while actually doing MS.The students get admits into B schools on opting courses such as this.

From what i’ve asked many, the best options during these hard times are:

1.If you want an MBA,better have 2-3 years of work experience
2.Avoid MTech unless you get into some seriously good institution. Eg:IITs
3.Take the GRE test and get into a reputable university in US.One can always persue an MBA after MS,in case thats what one wants. Its too risky to go directly for a foreign MBA,with job security a concern

    hi folks..especially for d query of jibin…

i hav to giv some reply eventhough m bit busy with some courses…..

well, ur query abt changing the streams….personally i wudnt recommend this…bcs once u do a graduation, the whether u like it or not, knowingly or unknowingly, ur brain s tuned to the fundas of d subject….evenafter a lil longer time, the decay is not asymptotical…u can always brush ur memory n recover bak…..whereas, if u wanna change the stream, u need to pave the seeds of the subject in an otherwise used up soil…..bit hard…u need tht much passion and conviction abt the subject n high amount of energy to grasp the funda….remember, aging has got an influence on your grasping capacity and moreover u gonna compete or work with someone who had been working with d subject since ‘kids’ stage….m not kidding buddy….these are the consequences….but this doesnt mean tht one cant switch the subject….

i have typical examples for u….i have my batchmate, who did Mech with me in CEA switched his career and subject to Electrical. Doesnt mean tht he s a guy who didnt like mech..note tht he was full pass thro all sem n academically better than me…then the Qn, y he changed the subject….there is a solid reason…his dad has got business, which deals with electrical…obviously he gotta manage that….don jump into conclusions…he didnt join his dad’s business right aft college….he took a training cum career @ Siemens Germany…den he did his Masters in Electrical….now he s working in Swiz…not yet joined his dad’s business….we hope to see him in cochin sooner or later…..

i also have another example…who s my junior @ cea, he was doing electronics…later he changed his field to mech, did another btech kinda degree….d reason s he s running a business of mech engg….

to sum up, unless n until u hav solid reasons, think twice or thrice before u take d decision…..n i hav no comments to the guys who will change the field frm mech to IT….bcs its widely told tht if u r an engg. graduate n has a common sense, u can do the tasks in an IT comp better without doing all these specialisations….atleast i havnt come across anyone in india who s doing a first class intellectual IT work…..probably comps like google mit be doing…m not sure….am not blaming the guys…its d system in our country….if u really wanna do a first class work in any field, not only in IT, its bit difficult to find the right place….business s not driven by wether u doing invention or not…its purely driven by money n how fast u launch a product with less time, money n efforts…tht s d mantra….in business u don hav d luxury of trying 99 ways of how not to make a bulb….u just need to apply a known process to produce something n make good marketing strategies n make money…den u will be feeding many more guys….so nothing s bad….its ur choice….

well, i didnt intent to write this looong….now abt ur last qn on study opportunities…..well, a few years earlier, the Masters degree in Denmark was free of fees. so u had to clear the gre n toefel n need to apply….now its no more free…u need to pay…n getting scholarship for Masters is highly difficult n the living cost in europe is pretty expensive…..the better way is to do a Masters in india and come over here for doctorate….there r lotta scholarships for PhD….remember, the insti where u do a Masters surely matter….it must be nothing less than IIT…..

    ok guys…..all the best…

i donno wen s CEA organising an alumni meet!!!

I would say there is no problem in changing streams, if you are comfortable and have some passion in learning the new subjects.

Gone are the days with single specialization. The future is for combinations. For eg., MEMS -> It includes Mechanical, Electronics, Electrical. I.T and programming are used in almost all the fields, whether it be Mech or Electrical or Telecommunication etc.
(Recently, I recommended a hardcore Mechanical Engr to learn programming even though he do not like programming. The mechanical parts in an automobile are controlled by electrical/electronics and will be replaced by softwares in the near future. Some already have high end softwares)

10 years down the line, I am sure one will be studying Mech subjects(atleast one) in EC or computer and vice versa!!

N.B: The Engg. specialization is based on the Entrance ranks. If one doesn’t have a very good rank, he/she is forced to take a specialization; but his/her mind will always be with some other fields.

if this is the qn, well, to be honest, there are no clear answers…it purely depends on market dynamics…..to give you some points, in a broader sense, the M.Techs have an edge over B.Techs. Let me explain how this is…there are companies who wants some specialised tasks to be done professionally….then they choose M.Techs and offer a bit higher salary compared to B.Techs. This doesnt mean tht B.Techs cant do a professional job…they are also as good as the M.Techs. But it is the specialisation that gives an edge also tht reduces your choices. Say, you are specialised in embedded. So u will be looking for a job which warrants ur expertise. In the market, out of ‘n’ companies, say there are only ‘m’ companies who does this work, then ur chances of getting a job is only from these (n-m) companies. So what you should do is that find out a trade off between your interest and ur forecast about a future technology. I know it is not that easy to predict what the market wants after 5 or 10 years. you need to talk to old guys n also see n post these in these kinda blogs, which give u lotta inf. then make a good judgement using these inf.
On top of all, i would say, if u knw the stuff, u will certainly have a job in ur hand. no doubt.
feel free to post ur queries…

    all the best….

Nice reply from Gireesh Kumar :)

I would definitely support anyone who is going for a post-graduation because only 2% in India are getting a chance for their Masters.
Let me repeat: try to attend a full-time course in a reputed, good institute. If you cannot make it out, then go for an above average one.

    Salary:
There is no problem for an M.Tech graduate from a reputed institute, and will be highly paid. But those from an above average institute will not get enough salary margin compared to a B.Tech graduate in the initial years. But after 4-5 years, there will be a marginal difference in the salaries between B.Tech and M.Tech graduates.
(Interviewers, some times, reject a candidate because he/she is over-qualified for a particular job and the Co. is not in a position to pay a very high salary)

    Job:
M.Tech graduates usually do more sophisticated and specialized jobs. They do higher level of jobs like ‘Designing’- high level design and some times low level designs, while the B.Tech graduates simply do coding and testing(In less complicated softwares, even a B.Tech graduate can design). Some times they are into innovation or R&D and some times into teaching.
(I know one person who had done his M.Tech. from an IIT and is a lecturer in an Engg. college)

    Promotion and future:
M.Tech graduates and B.Tech graduates usually get promoted more or less the same, till a particular level. After that, other things remain the same, the HR will check the educational qualifications for further promotions. Here there is more chances for a post graduate to get promoted.

    The truth:
Above all, it is in the hands of God. You cannot control it. It is all pre-determined. :) Still, be positive.

I want to get into management but want to do my MBA frm a top notch intl. school like harvard stanford wharton LBS etc. But they req. job experience to even think of entering them plus they also hv a high rejection rate and they can reject real good applications so I am a bit confused that if I don’t really get a great recruitment after my grad. shud I go abroad for higher studies to get a good job with intl. exposure or should i study for CAT, but IIM is not really my aim I know they r good but no where in comp. to top US schools. So my real ques is Higher studies for better opp. or MBA (trying for CAT) or job(whatever I get for that exp. and inc. my chances for a better global school) if my ultimate goal is management?

Can some one advise what to do? Should I appear for GATE 2010 and how to get into IIT’s. My subject (i.e. Electronics & Communication Engineering) I don’t want to change at any case. Or should I do MS from US or singapore?
After this I would certainly go for PhD, but with a gap of at least a year or 2.
Is it possible to score good percentile in GATE 2010 for ECE in just 6 months from now?

All the relevant and stressful questions have been asked…n all this has bugged all of us at some point of time during our engg days…I guess i will talk a bit bout my experience..n i will be honest…engg was not a conscious decision for me..it was more like going with the flow..do what everyone does…so 1st yr was spent in adjusting to the new place, hostel life n all..2nd yr- started getting a hang of engg…3rd- knew that engg was not my cup of tea..n 4th yr- did not know how to get out of the most obvious career choice at that time-IT..
so here i was in 2007..with a b-tech degree in EC n no interest in the field..with a placement in IT company without any skills for it..but all this while i had a vague idea that i wanted to do an mba..nd i am right now pursuing it..i know its a bit tough to explain as to why mba after btech..but that is what mba is…if you are planning to do an mba that is the first ques they will ask you coz they want to see your clarity of thought..for me it was all about the kind of career i wanted…i wanted to see my contributions to the organization from a managerial level…this is a personal opinion- the heading mba vs mtech vs ms is putting us in the same situation as before..why is there a vs in between them..those 3 are career choices for people with different skill set and aptitute..so why put a versus? instead of going for the pay package or the attraction of a particular degree what we all should do is find out our skills..what we are good at..n the kind of work we like to do..then research..a lot.about the career prospects in each of them n try matching them with your own job interest..so if you liked the engg stuff then research what value addition will you have if you do an mtech..n off course the money part is always to be taken care of…also doing an mba after work ex is good n sought after coz after you work in an organization n decide to do mba you have more clarity about the specialization you want to choose…k..lots of gyan…do lots of research..talk to people workin in the relevant fields..hope all of you get your dream jobs..:)

    So u finally joined MBA…..
Yes every person have some skills inside him…but that skills are hidden to him unless he resolve it out. Also the are skills which is not in u inherently..but u can develop it with hard work and keen determination. As u said BTECH was a cup of Tea for u..if 2 or 3 years after,if u hav a second thought abt MBA,tht MBA is not a cup of TEA for u then wht will u do..
I can say one thing…Many people hook up for MBA,bcoz of the High salary package and status tht provide one…We are very familiar that,A MBA graduate frm IIM or FMS or any big MBA institute get a huge salary tht a EC or EEE or Mech Engineer with MTECH or even Btech would not get. So,its bcoz of this many people are ready to Join MBA after Btech.

I admit tht, every subject has some pits and falls, but its the interest in tht subject or profession, tht will help to face the challenges.
Nw its recession time..So a MTECH will not help a engineer, many would think like tht…but, its not correct.

Go for Mtech or MS if love ur engineering Degree…..Then later on Reasearch or Phd or whatever..even MBA…

I would also suggest another thing..Its better to take MTech then MBA….as MTECH needs ur technical knwledge and wht u learn frm BTECH..
Im sure tht, later on we will forget, wht we learned frm BTECH.An MBA has nothing to do with Btech Syllabus but and MTECH need ur subject Basics..

    Final Point:
GO FOR WHATEVER COURSE..ONLY IF U HAVE REAL INTEREST IN IT..

    Hi Rijo…..

First you need to tell me where are you doing your CAT coaching??coz a lot depends on the kind of guidance you get for preparation..I can share the little knowledge that I have..there are a lot of specializations being offered..like HR, Marketing, Finance, Operations, International Business etc etc..they all pertain to the specific ways you can contribute towards the growth of the organization you join…So, if you are a person who believes that the employees being the most important resources it is important to work for getting the best ones nd also retaining them then HR is ur thing..for this you shud believe that you can contribute best when you work for the development of your employees nd this work gives you most satisfaction. for taking marketing you should have a knack of selling nything or rather a knack of convincing people to belive what you say…you can have a creative bend of mind..so if you like tight deadlines, like talking n like to make people believe in what you want then marketing is your forte…finance is all number loving people…even though we call it diff specialzations but it is imperative to understand that none of these work in isolation..so if you are an HR person you cannot turn around nd say that you are only bothered about your employees nd you dont need to know the balance sheet of the company…
this is just an overview…i had attended TIME coaching classes nd got valuable inputs from there…try talking to your other friends who are preparing nd if you can then talk to professionals working in the relevant field…
Are you planning for this year CAT??then do prepare well as there is not much time left now..
    All the best….Happy Studying..:)

Currently I’m not thinking of MBA, my priority would be to achieve MS/MTech, but right now I’m unaware about the specialization that I’d opt for.
So I’m thinking to get into the job after my BE completion & probably after gaining some exp I’d be sensible enough to choose the right option.
Is this a fair choice, or is it advisable to achieve PG in technical field in continuation with the bachelors course?

Secondly, How’ll you contrast MTech(from iits & iisc) & MS(from well known university) regarding the syllabus, fee structure, infrastructure, quality of coaching & guidance, exposure to advanced technology, preference in india/abroad & last but not least the PAY PACKAGE ?

As per my opinion u don’t require any special coaching for cracking gate but one should be very clear with the fundamentals taught in respective four yrs of BE/Btech.
For study materials you can rely on the reference books available for particular subject.
Though I joined Vidyalankar for gate prep, I didn’t find that very useful though it helps u developing the exam oriented approach through intensive problem solving.
As far as my score is concerned, I didn’t work very hard to get so far as I knew that this score was not valid for 2yrs so I appeared gate09 just as a trial.

Note: final or prefinal yr students of BE/Btech can appear for gate but as the score is valid for 1yr, appearing gate in prefinal yr won’t help u for the admissions

So you have a Job experience too…i guess it technical experience..So better u do Mtech bcoz u have got a technical mind..
MBA is also a good option for u,all depends on ur taste…
    I guess u better go for MTECH….
So prepare frm the Btech Level and clear the GATE-2010 exam…
Goto some IIT;s and earn an Mtech..
I guess some IT companies also provide MBA/Mtech education oppurtunities..So if ur company support tht..apply there itself..

    Sourabh,

“Accept the suggestions from people and YOU should make the decision. Never allow others to make decisions pertaining to your life”

Since you are confused(about MBA vs MS vs M.Tech), i would suggest you to get some work experience. By that time, you will make up your mind to which course you need to go for.

By small company, i am assuming it as a Small and Medium Enterprises(SMEs). There are pros and cons for both Small firms and Big firms. The advantage of small firm is that you will do multiple jobs and multi-tasking. This will enable you to learn more things. Also you will get to know what is happening in a project, end-to-end. Here the problem is the company may not have standardized processes or quality checking. All will be cluttered. But in a reputed firm, you will get brand value. But you will end up in doing a very small portion of a very big project. Here you have a systematic process to do a job/project.

There is no problem in working in a small firm. But make sure, you learn something from there. ‘Your first job has a tremendous influence on your career path in future’. And there is no discrimination whether you worked in small firms or big firms while you join a PG course. But a work-ex from a reputed firm will bring you some reputation among students and teachers.

3 years of work ex is ideal for doing a PG. Most of the foreign Universities demand atleast 3 years of work-ex. If it’s more than 3 years and planning to join MBA, then it is a little bit difficult for a person to change his/her mindset. MBA requires one to unlearn what (s)he has studied and re-learn new things. But it does not affect if you are joining MTech or MS.
If you are joining a small firm, learn as much as possible from there with in the first one and a half years. Then move on to a reputed firm and work for another one and a half years.
There is a hidden problem.. If you have completed 3 years of work-ex, you will be drawing a ‘very good’ pay slip. This may pull you back as you are enjoying a ‘lavish’ life.

If you are not getting a job within 2-3 months, then do one thing- keep on trying. I know my friends who have not got a job for the first 1-2 years, but end up in very good job and a good salary.

Its a good discussion forum. But please don`t show amateur comments and amateur views appear as professional advices. And please don`t let some of the stupid comments //graduation other than from IIT is waste// without strongly reprimanded or removed.
Please try to be more professional and write a blog on some subject you actually know or have done some basic research if you are actually trying to give career advice or don`t destroy the careers of many youngsters hu may visit..And Dont let ur bias come in betweeen.
Let there be someone who actually knows what a person after MBA is doing or what is the job in an investment bank where u may earn big salaries…Is salary the whole thing or is it about the job u love to do…if ur focus is centred on salary then chances are that ur life will be only centred around money and some boring work and life…
Some technical knowledge will be good for a middlelevel manager working in a technical fIRM.That does not mean technical people will make it big if they go management…An understand that no one can teach u management in a school but firms are only selecting the supposedly brightest youngsters.
And it is stupid to say that CAT is the toughest exam.Be specific .On what account. If it is regarding the knowledge base, language base ,focussed hard work and probability of getting into then undoubtably the hardest currently in India is civil services..If it is regarding the technical stuff u r knowing then at this point of career it wil be GATE.and if it is quantitative, verbal aptitude then it will be CAT.
The salaries of IIM graduates have dropped down significantly..If u love management and glitz of business world go CAT way.If it is about authority, power and status go UPSC.if it is technical where u loves to be and wanted to be an authority in what u do go GATE way.But weigh ur chances and dont go lloking for money alone.Numerous other optiona are available…If u love journalism go that way and if u love research go that way….the road will be bumpy but u ll have a satisfied life…..

    Hello everyone,
m doing B.E. in Electrical Enginnering from Jadavpur University,Kolkata. M in 2nd yr now and clearly have about two years to prepare myself to crack anyone of competitive exams (like CAT or GATE).
But m confused now in the same question- whether i will go for MBA or M.Tech or will do the both….
The options i have at this point of moment are….

i)MBA(from IIM)-it will get me into higher dimension which will give me almost everything a careerist can wish to have, but it will not make me master(master degree) in my subject(i.e. EE). rather it will get me into a fast-forwarded life too early i.e. in 23-24 yrs.

ii)M.Tech., then MBA- yeah it will give me a scope to say others- i am a post grad in my field. But will i have the tenacity to crack the CAT after completing my m.tech?

besides I want to know what’s the percentage of students entering IIMs with an M.Tech. degree.
Is there any need to have an m.tech. degree as well as mba to be the ceo or like that?

Rather there is a higher possibility of success in GATE than CAT as the seats are too much compared to that of IIMs). Should one opt for the GATE if he is weak in English(like me) as he will get an extra two years span to make up his draw backs?

    Hi Gireesh,

Vipul this side. It’s the first time that I’ve been through this site and I really find your comments fruitful.

Basically, I work in I.T. industry, currently having the work ex of more than 2 yrs.
I’m in a real dilemma and want to have some clarity from you. I was thinking to pursue the M.S./M.Tech degree.
Q-1) What I want to know is if i join for an MS, somehow make it out after 3 years, what kind of jobs am i going to get into. I’m not interested in any kind of teaching or research jobs; and sir, what are the prospects for my field of choice?? Could I still be a part of the I.T. industry with a lavishing package or it won’t make any difference?

Q-2) The same set of questions hold, if I opt for M.Tech. Do software companies prefer M.Tech over B.Tech or it won’t make much difference from their perspective?

I also thought for an option of M.B.A. and did prepare for it some years back, but wasn’t through with any prestigious college, so opted to work rather than M.B.A.

In nut shell, I’m unable to decide as to go for which option?
Kindly provide your comments on the same.

Hi…every one are clear with their good logics..

I would like share my experience, i have completed my B.Tech(IT) in 2008. While pursing my B.Tech i decided to do job after B.Tech. So, I was in search of job for 5 months, but
no hopes. Later i was selected and offered for some PG Diploma from CDAC, where they gave me placement guarantee. As i have got no other options and even previous CDAC placement record was good, i pursued it.

But to my fate, after completing that 6 months course, i don’t know whether due to the recession or CDAC cheated me what ever it is, finally i was not placed… just i got the CDAC certificates. But even then i did not stop my searching. With the technology that i learned perfectly in CDAC, searched for a job in that field but i could not even get a single chance to attend the interview.

So, finally now iam pursuing my M.Tech… Guys what i want to say u is have some alternatives and prepare for them during ur B.Tech itself. Once u complete Btech ur on the horse race, there is no looking back…

    coming back to the topic
me= BE(Comps) ,+5y Exp in IT. I have worked in service companies (just about an year) as well big IB like Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley..

talking about the MBA or MS or a MTech is a good one but you should remember which ever path you go you can only deside what you end up with .. In my 5ys or work ex i have seen some Btechs getting same or more sal that a average MBA guys. Also if you look at the stats this yeas my company hired Btechs and Mtech (from IIT and others) at the same level. OK the Mtech might not be (Btech,IIT + Mtech,IIT) but still … Also we have one of our team member (Btech, nonIIT + Phd,USA) working on the same project as us .. he do have a fat pay check but talking to him it seems you should always knwo what you want before getting in to that course be it Btech, Mtech or MBA.
No point in doing it just because they say its the best thing to do .

MS gives you a option to work abroad .. which is considered as a big plus .. ok it might be a big plus in some most of senarios but not always .. i have some classmates who did there MS and are back in India thanks to the slump in US economy ..

Doing an MBA from a great B school is always the best .. its not that you will end up as an HR , if you are good even with out an workEx you can get in to mgm after an MBA.

MBA has good money .. i mean one of my school class mate was in VJTI and then in IIM A .. his pay is good but equal to mine (in 7 digits PA) .. but its the starting point for him where as i got it after 5 yesra of work ex … the way up for me from here might not be that smooth so a MBA would really launch me in a higher orbit ..

Also one thing i have notice in IT field i have seem plp with BCom (i dont say its bad ) and with couple of yesr more Exp earning same as an BE/ Btech … but i have seen thoes guys they are good in what they do .. so that matters ..

any ways … after so much thinking i have made up my mind .. would get in MBA (preferably 1 yr) in some good school (IIMs may be ISB :P ) .. would requre efforts but i know me will make it happen ..

so guys set your goal before you start you journey .. no matter what path you take .. you will get what you wnat if you put the right efforts !!

my personal opinion and from what i hav heard..DEFINITELY an MS is better..that too from top foreign universities..since it stresses on practical side of studies..its also the best if u r going for research or taking up a teaching position..and for an additional inspiration see sites of harvard, stanford, mit etc ..u can see many of their students are indians..especially keralites..
we hav oftem heard that keralites find it very hard to get into IITs for btech(due to the lack of coaching schools maybe)..a btech from an IIT is the best..but an MS from a top university in the world is much better than an mtech from IIT.
top universities are mainly in US , UK :harvard, stanford, yale, mit,UoT,cambridge etc..i have also heard that Nus in singapore is very good..also the University of tokyo and south korean universities if money is a big problem..enquire abt it before making any further steps.

    Here are my 2 cents.

After B.Tech work for atleast 2-3 years and you will soon realize where your interest lies, being in technical field or moving towards management.

If its Technical move out of job to pursue M.Tech/MS only if you get admission into top college or otherwise it won’t help much and its better to continue adding to your experience or maybe join some part-time M.Tech/MS program supported by your employer fine example would be MS Software Systems from BITS PILANI.

If your call is for Management, continue working for another 2-3 years moving into bit of supervisory role like technical lead and the pursue MBA once you have minimum 5 years of work experience provided that you get one of top institutes with good placement otherwise again as said above it won’t help much and then its better to continue working and join part-time management programmes, example would be IIMB’s PGSEM or GMITE if you are located in Bangalore.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi All,

I am not from CEA. I have done my engineering in CS(batch 2007) and now working in IT firm. I too had confusion between Mtech/MS/MBA so landed up at this page.

Information and discussion is really nice and provides clarity to a large extent.

    I have a question regarding M.Tech:
–>>Do institutes like IIT give admission for M.Tech solely based on the individual’s GATE score or do they consider academic records(10th,12th or engg marks?) for admission as well. I have been an average student with above 70 percent marks throughout except 10th :( …If anyone can reply to my doubt it would be great..

I have same doubt about placements after M.Tech:
–>> Do companies offering jobs to M.Techs select/reject a candidate based on their earlier academics (10th/12th/engg marks?)

Since, I usually have came across MTechs who were also toppers in their engineering and school life so I wanted to clarify if being an average student, M.Tech is a better option for me or not?

Hi to all. This is the place where i found that am not only person who is in confused state to what to do.Firstly i want to thank the person who started this wonderful blog.Just i want to share my experience and i will wait for a good solution for my problem.

To say about my self iam a b tech student passed out in 2007(CSE) from a college where there are no campus placements and even i lack good planning to what to do after my btech. How even i got second class in my b tech and came out in search of job.But i have some confidence where i can crack this problem.I met some people and started .net course and completed that dedicatedly for 6 months and started searching job. After many disappointments i started my career in .net finally by joining in a small company and i started working in real time but unfortunately company closed their activities after few months and again very luckily i got job immediately in other company. But Becoz of recession i lost that job too.So watz next for me.e

Now at this point of time iam not getting calls so iam thinking of going to further studies to cover my percentage. But wat about my experience. It is not even time to attend for mtech what i can do.

NEXT IMPORTANT THING PEOPLE HERE ARE COMMENTING INSTITUTES BECAUSE THEY DONT POSSES GOOD FACULTY……..I WANT TO KNOW IF THERE ARE NO GOOD TEACHERS WHY THE GOVT SHOULD RUN SUCH INSTITUTES AND WASTE PUBLIC MONEY……………I ALSO LIKE TO SAY SOON OUR COUNNTRY IS GOING TO FACE A DEARTH OF FACULTY………ALSO ……WHEN THERE ARE NO GOOD TEACHERS THERE WILL BE NO SKILLED STUDENTS…..AND THIS REALLY EFFECTS DEVELOPMENT OF NATION……ALL THE SKILLED OR KNOWLEDGEABLE STUDENTS GO FOR A JOB…..AND THE UNSKILLED SETTLE AS TEACHERS THATS WHAT U MEAN……..DONT LOOK DOWN AT TEACHING PROFESSION…………..OUR COUNTRY, CULTURE …..,OUR VEDAS ……ALL HAVE A GOOD PLACE FOR “GURU”………BEING YOUNG GENERATION OF THIS NATION WE SHOULD NOT JUST COMMENT THE SYSTEM, WE SHOULD TRY TO BRING CHANGES IN THE SYSTEM BCOZ IT IS YOUR OWN COUNTRY………UR ULTIMATE GOAL SHOULD BE UR NATIONS DEVELOPMENT THEN OBVIOUSLY WE ALL WILL DEVELOP. Hi ,

I haven’t possibly read the entire thread but have sampled a few articles and am rather interested in discussing/researching the topic. I am the product of the global economic meltdown passed out in 2009, did my engg from a grade b engg college , realised that i could actually be an engg ;) in second year and fell in love with my trade worked hard , got placed in IT (havent got my call yet)but thank fuly bagged an offer in the EDA industry and now i work with one of the leading EDA vendors, I have MTECHS working alongside me for the same permanent position at a higher stipend.

I read the article posted here and it strikes a chord,I see here its mentioned that Mtech is for specialisation and may or may not be research based.. truly said, but, as a matter of fact I feel that the need for an MTECH is rather industry specific , for eg, in semiconductors I look for job openings and most design houses or EDA vendors need a candidate to be an MTECH ,unless offcourse you graduated from the IITS. SO the very question of a Mtech is nullified. We need to answer essential questions like : what , why, where, how, how many times, and how much time etc?? ..

As far as the MS degree is concerned, yes it continues to remain the most coveted degree in the market , but i think a person needs to factor in the economic realities and job market before making a call.

As far as an MBA is concerned, well, i remain stumped here…. I would really like working professionals to through some light on the matter how are people viewed from the lens of prospective employers , what skill sets are employers looking at , How do engineers derive a competitive advantage not only in the deadly CAT but also during their working life, what is the right time to go for a MBA, are their any age curbs we should be considerate about ..etc !!

This is an xtremly gr8 post this is the thing which i always think when i entered the engg. I am doing BE in 2nd year having IT as my branch.i am not able to decide that which option should i choose if Mba
(it is different field wrt to tech and now in a gr8 craze but every1 running behind it and just after doing it about 70-80%roaming in search of jobs and they r good for nothing and at last they switched to the public sector or just work in a small company or manage their ancestors business and if sm1 have a strong penchant for mba so one should opt for only and only cat exam and enter into iim so they will be good for every thing else they will left only with a degree of B.TECH and MBA they just wander over here and there) so according to me if have to do MBA than i sholud or every body should try to get into iim no matters how it hard nut to crack .
    else if
    M.Tech
(it’s the same field where anyone can further proceed in his technical stream but mainly get a profession of teaching after that
and only less people get jobs in a company as a master so that they cannot take out a juice from them bcz they are hving MTech degree with them and if one to do M.tech so it should be from reputated institutions like IIT,NIT etc so just to focus on a
GATE preparation and try to get into it mainly in IIT or NIT
else always one will go for teaching after that )
    else if
    public services
(since it is a very good and comfortable according to all the people who suggests and it secure the future and all type of gov. aid and only hv to work for a limited period of time and can be joined in our city also and can spend time with our family but just totally different from tech stream)
    else
    job
(which is now too difficult to get as it is the recession time mainly for IT but if job achieved they just take out all your efforts from your inside or can say that they will take out the juice from you by taking a work for about 16-18 hours per day beside this all people use to say that look!! that guy is an engg. and get a job in Banglore or elsewhere )
so please can u help me out from these problems that which should i opt for , and i am not able to find that -my interest is mainly in which sub and how can i find my interest in my subjects , i am knowledge seeker type, want to know everything and interested in everything depends on the mood , i feel interest somtym in every field somtym also thought that y can’t i do all that but just not possible , thr r lots and lots of question in my mind so please can u help me and please send me an email for the same

See What ever technical papers are covered in B.Tech any branch is more than enough .. M.Tech though is of 2 years is actually of only 1 year because the 2nd year is only project .. Supposing you consider compueter sciecne see even general bsc/bcom guys become techie with just 3 years MCA course but offocurse B.Tech in computer science is the esiest one in terms of Semesters and thats why an MCA like course was invented because out of all technical branches only this is the branch which general people can survive in and more over M.tech exists only in India and also Engineers opting to do MBA also exists in India and are allowed to do so for the only reason is that Engineers are not paid enough as compared to foreign countries and offcourse if Engineers will not go for MBA then it would be an insult when bsc/b.com/ba/bcs people will earn more than Engineers just by doing some mba course and also to see them in IIM’s will be another insult. As far as M.Tech is consider i think MS is much better than M.Tech because it is just of one year in most universitites(excepting IIT’S) and also you will learn more what ever you want to learn .. and most companies where ever you are workign for promote MS more than M.Tech .. So better go for MS or if you want to be research line for ever then go for PHD after MS. or after B.Tech also .

Can u please guide me that which is better MBA from a good institute (top 25)in India or MBA from a okay College from USA/UK etc. ?

If one wants to pursue MBA from UK after B.Tech one should apply directly by appearing at IELTS or should prepare for GMAT ? (Without GMAT also one can get entry into MBA Colleges)

    Please analyse the situations :-
    1. MBA from a good College (Top-25) in India.
    2. MBA from a okay College Outside India.

    {All this considering the fact that the Student is not a genius but Hard-Working and diligent}

WOW.!!! U ppl r doing a great job by guiding us out of this confused mind set.:) But i’ve my own queries to make.. I’m planning to Do my MBA in UK after my B.E..Just when i finished applying for all universities in UK, my fellow members started giving me all negatives about MBA in UK.. Instead they suggested me to do my MS in business rather than MBA.. Is it true that MS in business has an upper hand over MBA .?

    Respected Sir

I am a 2nd year BE student(Computer Science). I am probably aware that i am not made for MBA. But I am really confused whether to do Mtech after my BE, or not. Many people says that Mtech is a waste of time as the company package difference between a BE and Mtech candidate is not so much.

Please tell me the benefits of doing Mtech after BE with respect to job opportunities and salary package.

    Thank You

Many people says that Mtech is a waste of time as the company package difference between a BE and Mtech candidate is not so much; instead ppl should take the job and your package will be equivalent in these 2 years as that of Mtech candidate(+ experience benefit extra). And ppl also says that after Mtech ppl ends in teaching profession.

    Please tell me:

1: the benefits of doing Mtech after BE with respect to job opportunities and salary package(i dont want to be in teacing or research profession).

2: doing Mtech leads to teaching profession???

3: is it better to be placed in a job (for experience)and then pursue for Mtech (plz compare between Mtech before job and Mtech after job)

4: i want to be in technical field. does it make a big difference if i do not pursue Mtech(regarding future scope & salary)

5: will it be a better option if i go for any diploma or specialisation over Mtech degree.

Plz help me out i am really confused

    Dear All achievers,
I am 23 just completed B-tech (EEE evening classes)working as tech supoort engr in an IT company for past 5 years on the basis of diploma engg. The profile here i am handling is not very impressive & not even enough growth is there in this profile. Till now I was doing this job bcs I had 2 attend the classes of btech in the eve evry day.

But now I am really confused what 2 do next:

    1. Change the current profile which again needs additional skill sets & things will start again from zero & my 5yr work-ex will go waste.
    2. Should I go for MBA? If yes then will my work-ex of 5yr which is based on my Diploma engg be counted??
or is the work-ex after the graduation only considered??

I want make my career in private sector only.
Should I change my profile first again work for 1-2 years & then go for CAT?
