Google Chrome is easily the fastest browser on earth available today .It had its beginning in the form of an open source project  code named Chromium .chrome-logoThe goal of the project was to  create a browser with improved stability speed and security and still be able to give the lean user what maters to them most: a simple uncluttered and efficient user interface. It was available for the first time in September 2008 as a beta release. The response it got was unbelievable ,it touched the 10 million users mark within 100 days of its initial beta release. Then it went to many a face lifts and fixes and the latest version available in the market is version 2.0.172.28 released on may 21 2009.

I was one among them who were fortunate to use Chrome from its initial beta release itself. Its main catch was the Speed and uncluttered interface. But there were many problems with the initial beta releases like untimely crashing ,some issue with playing of flash movies(files from youtube) and many more .With subsequent versions google have fixed most of these issues. The latest version is not mere  set of fixes but rather it have many new features added to it further strengthening the belief of the people on Chrome.

The main improvements in the latest version are faster Java script engine V8,web kit updates ,automatic form filling, selective deleting of  last visited thumb nails and many more. But the feature which interested me more was the enhanced support for languages which includes regional languages of India like Bengali,Malayalam,Tamil etc.

Now let us see how well google chrome speaks Malayalam and new feature which support for searching using Malayalam keyword using the English letters.

Step 1 : Go To Tools >Options

p1

Step 2 : Click on Change Fond and language settings under the minor tweaks tab and go to the languages tab

a) Add Malayalam to the list of languages used for reading websites bye clicking the add button and selecting Malayalam

b) Change Google Chrome language to Malayalam

p4

Step 3: Press OK and restart the browser

Google chrome starts speaking Malayalam

p6

Now let us try to search a term we get along with the conventional suggestions possible words in Malayalam as suggestions.

p5

Till her all is well and good .But on close examination we can see that the Malayalam that chrome speaks is not always that followed by the Malayalam literature , I think this is due to lack of support for full Malayalam character . So it may convey the meaning but don’t expect the spelling of words to be correct always.

Another problem regarding chrome from its first release is that it is having an on-line installation, this keeps the dial-up away from this product.

Let us hope that the offline-installer will be available (from google) in the near future and dial-up users also will get the opportunity to experience this wonderful browser.
